World heritage site Røros
Røros Copper Works mined copper ore at Røros for over 300 years from 1644 to 1977.
The old town, also known as "Bergstaden", has maintained much of its orginal character, including the street plan dating from the 17th century, and timber houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. The smelting house and its suttounding area formed a natural centre for the community. Copper production was combined with farming and it is these two activities which have shaped the town and its cultural environment. Røros was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980.
