In 1980 Røros was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites. In 1988 the smelting shed was rebuilt after the fire and now serves as the home of The Røros Museum Trust, which was founded in 1990. The national boundary between Norway and Sweden was moved to the east of Femunden and Røros Copperworks attained access to large natural and forest resources. | The early days
In 1644 the first traces of copper were discovered at Rauhåmmåren. By 1646 the first smelting shed had been constructed. The letter of concession, or the granting of privileges, from the King in Denmark awarded enormous rights to the Company within a defined circumference area. The workers rebelled at the end of the century. Røros was burnt to the ground by Swedish troops in 1678 and again in 1679. mer... | Bad times and Change
Bad times and low prices for copper, led to starvation. In 1814 the Union between Norway and Denmark was dissolved. Improvements were made in the mine and in the processing in the smelting sheds. | Strikes and wars
In 1901, during the great strike, there was an extended period without production. During the First World War there were good profits but after the war production was again halted. A government subsidy was required to save Røros Copperworks. In 1936 Olav’s Mine was opened up. The mine was closed during the Second World War, but in the years that followed the war, production resumed again at stable levels. mer... | New technology
In 1877 the railway line to Røros was completed. In 1886 the railway line from Tyvold to Nordgruvene was constructed. However, in 1896 this line was superseded by an overhead cable transport system. The Bessemer process of smelting and kilns equipped with water jackets were started up in the 1880s. Kuraas fossen power station was constructed in order to supply electricity to the mines. mer... |
| Closing down
In 1959 aerial prospecting for minerals started. In 1972, when Olav’s Mine was shut down, mining work started up in Legruvbakken in Nordgruvområdet (the Northern Mines) the main product was zinc. After some very profitable years, prices dropped, and in 1977 Røros Copperworks was forced to close down for good. mer... | The Golden Age, Centenary
In 1718, and in 1719 Røros was spared from the attacks of Swedish soldiers. In 1730 the assets of The Røros Copperworks were divided into 172 shares. A number of mines and smelting sheds were in production. In 1744 the centenary was celebrated with great festivity. mer... |
